My name is John Schneider and I am a fifth generation farmer. Our family farms a grain farm located near the Fairview ski hill. We currently farm canola, and peas and in the past few years have farmed wheat as well. To me farming is more than a job, and yes everyone does a job so at the end of the day you have a pay cheque but farming is more than just a pay cheque. Farming is to my family putting years of passed down experience, and knowledge, mistakes and heartache into trying to grow an amazing crop that will provide for my family. In farming there are no guarantees, there are days where I feel like the luckiest man on earth, I have the best office view as the sun rises in my tractor putting my crop in, ecstatic as I watch the first rain after the crop is sowed and I anticipate what I could grow if mother nature is on my side this year. But I have also felt the devastation when the ground is too wet to put the crop in, or we get the crop in and the rain doesn't come and you wait impatiently as if waiting for a miracle, pacing and still no rain and watch as your fields dry up in front of you. The highs when you are standing in a crop of canola that is as high as your chest and the lows when the frost hits and you have nothing but that aching pit in your gut and nothing you can do. But wait for next year, and be determined to do your best even though all you want to do is pull your cap down and cry. Farming to me are the moments when you feel like quitting but don't, farming is an entire family young and old sharing learning and growing, farming is life long friendships with neighbours that will help you out for nothing but a coffee and a warm meal. Farming is about those life lessons that I will teach my son, while driving down a dirt road after 12 hours of combining , like my dad did with me and his dad did with him. That's what farming is to me.
