The #IMD2019 theme: Museums as Cultural Hubs: The future of tradition

The City of Grande Prairie -- Grande Prairie Museum and the Heritage Discovery Centre -- have partnered with the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum to bring you a full day of engaging educational fun, free of charge!

In addition to FREE admission to all three museums, the event will include:

• a special Guidebook for #IMD2019
• craft stations
• scavenger hunts
• other hands-on, experiential activities
• FREE Transit between all three museums

#IMD2019 Guidebook

The #IMD2019 Guidebook provides you with:

• dates and times specific activities are taking place at each museum
• the FREE Transit schedule
• unique "Did you know?" facts for each museum
• *not to be missed* a "Passport Stamp" section in which you have the opportunity to obtain a unique stamp at each of the museums
  • once completed, detach and enter your completed Passport Stamp ballot from the #IMD2019 Guidebook to be entered for a chance to win a special prizepack! (courtesy of the three participating museums!)

About International Museum Day

Every year since 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has organized International Museum Day (IMD), which represents a unique moment for the international museum community. On this day, participating museums plan creative events and activities related to the International Museum Day theme, engage with their public and highlight the importance of the role of museums as institutions that serve society and its development.

The objective of International Museum Day is to raise awareness of the fact that, “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.” Organized on and around May 18 each year, the events and activities planned to celebrate International Museum Day can last a day, a weekend or a whole week.

• Participation in International Museum Day is growing among museums all over the world. In 2018, more than 40,000 museums participated in the event in some 158 countries.
• ICOM selects each year for International Museum Day a theme that is at the heart of the concerns of society.

The role of museums in society is changing. Museums keep reinventing themselves in their quest for becoming more interactive, audience focused, community oriented, flexible, adaptable and mobile. They have become cultural hubs functioning as platforms where creativity combines with knowledge and where visitors can also co-create, share and interact.
